Sap and Green People
Sap and Green People is a love story. It is not the usual love story, however.
Rather it is a story about persons who have accepted their mortality and are
helping each other live meaningful lives in the face of constraints imposed by
advancing age.
The book’s protagonists are Bill and Marg Davis, married for over fifty years,
who have moved into the Haven at Oak Hill, a seniors’ community. There, they
define a new lifestyle while engaging with Henry Graham who spends the
preponderance of his time helping and jollying elderly persons, George Steiner
who obsesses over William Clark and Merriwether Lewis, Mary Spritzer whose
background is mysterious, and Jack Clausen who falls in love for the first time.
The Davises sustain their strong family relationships, look back at their past
from time to time, and steady each other as they traverse the final phase of
their shared life.
The book affirms marital, familial and agape love, and it gives an honest
impression of senior community life. Poignant and tender, Sap and Green People
is a wam, quiet reading experience.

A Pilgrimage with Charlie
Soon after Bill Davis dies, his wife, Marg elects to visit London, a city she
and Bill loved. “To work through my grief,” she explained to her family and
friends who oppose her decision. “To review my life, think about my future, and
chart a new course.”
And in London, that’s what Marg does. Cries and despairs. Reminisces about her
earlier years and those shared with Bill. Visits shops, parks, and cathedrals
with her irrepressible cousin Charlie who’s conducting business in London.
Becomes friends with Londoners and survives a mugging. Makes determinations
regarding her future.
Tender, funny, and intimate, A Pilgrimage with Charlie touches and amuses
while describing one woman’s very personal way of dealing with loss and grief.
