Coming Soon - Freyja's Promise
by Frederick Dick
Walter Detring and Karin Johanasson, like so many others of their generation,
met and married during the tumultuous years of World War II. They experienced
the exquisite beauty of love during their years together. Unfortunately that
idyll was short-lived, ending with Karin’s untimely death.
Freyja’s Promise tells their tender love story and also examines the debilitating
affects of a grieving that follows Walter Detring’s journey into old age.
Interwoven into that journey is the author’s premise that certain behavioral
responses of our ancestors survive the long, tenuous passage through generation
after generation. Such responses direct and control some of our present-day
actions, as evidenced by Walter’s decision to confront a belligerent neighbor.
Similarly, ancient observations and legends influence present-day behavior. In
Walter’s case, for example, Freyja, the Nordic Goddess of Love and Fertility
foretold that Walter would know again the kind of love he knew with Karin. He
finds that love in the unconditional love of a girl who helps piece together a
shattered life. Freyja’s Promise is a love story told from a male point of view, and speaks not
only to the healing power of love, but also to ancient, inherent attitudes
resting, often unrecognized, within each of us.
